For the second week in a row, the Sunshine Coast experienced another midweek deluge of much needed rain, but to our good fortune, cleared up to what was the perfect weekend for Mount Coolum Golf Club, who did a fantastic job preparing their course and facilities to host round 8 of our Zone Junior Pennants season, where our juniors, put in some incredibly exciting performances, particularly from the enormously talented…..
Noosa Springs team who continue to hold their nerve whilst maintaining top spot on the Zone Junior Pennants Ladder with a 2/1 win over Headland.
Noosa 2 weren’t going to be denied either, as they maintained second spot on the ladder with a 2/1 win over Noosa 1.
Nambour put in a strong performance to defeat Maroochy River (1) 2 – 1 to take a share of fourth spot with Nambour.
Whilst Caloundra put in a strong performance to def Gympie 2/1 with two of their matches finishing 1up!
For the large gallery that had the pleasure of following the absorbing match between Ionna Muir (Maroochy River) and Mickey Schimak – Orrell (Nambour) who fought hard to finish their match on the eighteenth, were treated to a brilliant display of sportsmanship from not only Ionna and Mickey, but also from their parents (caddies) in Peter and Pharnu who epitomize what our game is all about!
As mentioned, Mount Coolum and their team prepared their course and facilities for the day but given that this was Maroochy River 2 (bye) meant that Jim Di Pietra (Maroochy River Captain) ably supported by Kimberley Crawley did a brilliant job hosting the day.
They did a fantastic job and like most clubs, created an atmosphere where everyone enjoyed their golf and most importantly, felt welcome.
Once again, it was a great sight to see Dallas Furner (President) of the Sunshine Coast and South Burnett District Golf Association on hand to support our up and coming champions.
Some of the many highlights during the day included: Celebrating Alex Wheatley’s birthday, Lewis Shaughnessy’s brilliant putt on 7 to win the hole, Mickey Schimak-Orrell’s up and down on 7, Rafferty Noar approach to 7, Tama Stana’s excellent putt on 7, Brady Mann and Caitlyn Wheatley’s approaches to 7, Liam Dawson’s chip in on 4 for birdie and to win the hole, and Caitlyn Wheatley’s unbelievable 105m, 8 iron approach to the 9th that holed out for birdie, which were just a few of the many highlights that were on display during the day.
"On a side note: Congratulations to Liam Dawson from everyone on Tour for his perfectly placed 5 iron into the 165m fourteenth hole at Pelican Waters, to record a brilliant “Hole in One” in their Saturday comp to join an elite club".
Once again, competitors from all clubs (including their caddies, families and committee members) played in great spirit and should be applauded for the sportsmanship and friendships they bring to the game, even under great pressure, they create an unbelievable atmosphere.
Many thanks to those that have witnessed highlight or magical moments, both on and off the course and passed them on, it's much appreciated.
If you do happen to witness any magical moments, please feel free to text then to Graeme on 0417 783 848 so we can all enjoy the moment?
The Tour would also like to thank Scott Mayes (Sunshine Coast Golf Association) for his and their very generous support with stats and info.
