Given the obstacles that The Invincibles Tour and their host club Twin Waters had thrown their way, it was quite remarkable, and a credit to everyone involved that we got to contest our Championships at all, and the shear fact that we did, was a credit and testament to a team effort from Twin Waters Golf Club, the parents and some of Queensland’s finest junior golfers, who put in a brilliant effort to achieve what seemed impossible, given Covid restrictions and some serious weather that impacted the Sunshine Coast.

But, out of the trials and tribulations that tested everyone’s resolve, it was certainly made easier due to perfect weather conditions and perfectly presented Twin Waters facilities over the duration of the Championships, where we witnessed some incredible performances.

All matches were played in great spirit, particularly in the Girls Division 1, between Kate McFarlane (Bundaberg) and Yuuki Takada (Southport) who pushed each other to the limit (23rd hole) after Yuuki went one up on seventeen after a brilliant tee shot and birdie putt.

Full results:

Not to be outdone, Kate played a magnificent approach to what was an enormously difficult pin placement on eighteen, to set up birdie and force their match into extra time “a five hole playoff” that included both girls parring the par five first, they then went on to play the second, a par 3, three times with pars that included a brilliant chip in by Kate from the bunker side rough, that sent the match to the sixteenth hole, where both girls got away brilliant drives and approaches.

Yuuki chipped from the fringe of the green to within two meters of the pin, which left Kate a seventeen-meter putt for the win, which she made to the surprise and delight of the large gallery that followed.

This was a fantastic match that kept everyone’s attention, particularly for two very anxious parents in Janine McFarlane and Makoto Takada who were on the edge of their seats absorbing every shot, which was great to see and just goes to reinforce how much these events mean to our juniors and their families.

It was one of those matches, where it was sad that there had to be a winner and runner-up, because both girls really put in a great performance and deserved to win.

Kate was shocked, that was incredible, I thought I was out of it so many times, Yuuki is such a great player, she doesn’t give an inch and she is so calm under pressure, I feel lucky to get away with the win, it was an incredible match and experience that gives me a lot of confidence moving forward, Kate said.

Yuuki was disappointed with the outcome, but conceded that Kate played extremely well, particularly with her approach on 18, and her chip in on the first play-off hole, along with her long putt on the sixteenth, she really earned the win, but I am proud of the way I played, Yuuki said, and so she should be!

The match in Division 1 Boys: between Thomas Winn (Pacific) and Yevin Samararatne (Royal Queensland) was as always, played in great spirit, where Thomas went on to win 5/3.

Division 2 Boys: saw Jack Jones (Keperra) win an extremely competitive match against Adam Jansz (Pelican Waters) a match that ebbed and flowed all day with Jack eventually recording the win 2/up.

In Boys Division 3: Tom Hutchison (Twin Waters) put in a clinical performance against Marcus Carlson (Royal Queensland) to win 8/7 to defend his title.

The Inaugural Girls Division 2: between Juhi Rampersad (Pacific Harbour) and Lilly Surasen (Maroochy River) saw Juhi win 3/1, after both girls put in excellent performances and again played in great spirit.

Highlights on the day included: Thomas Winn and Yevin’s Samararatne’s approaches to the 5th and putts to record birdies to halve the hole, Lilly’s Surasen’s 3m putt for the win on 6, Tom Hutchison and Marcus Carlson’s tee shots on 7, Tom’s birdies on 7 and 9, Kate McFarlane’s up and down on 14 to square the match, Adam Jansz’s approaches to 13 & 14 and Yuuki’s Takada’s brilliant tee shot on 17, which were just a few of the many highlights that we were informed of during the finals.

The Tour would like to thank those parents that helped with mobile scoring, your support is much appreciated and goes a long way towards making sure everyone is happy with the results.

As is normally the case on The Invincibles Tour, it was fantastic to see so many of our past and present members who hadn’t qualified for the championships, come along to support, or caddie for those that were competing, well done. You epitomise what true sportsmanship is all about (as seen in the gallery that will follow) which is always a pleasure to be associated with.
